artist's statement Fractal patterns are everywhere I look: in river systems, cellular structures, crystalline rock fractures, galaxies and aerial maps of human activity. Their rhythm comforts me like a heartbeat; even wild and unpredictable chaos has a pattern of its own. The interconnectedness of things has been a strong theme in my work, with patterns from nature emerging as a motif of this connectedness. As people, our habits, bodies, and behaviours all echo the off-beat symmetry of the fractal patterns around us, and this speaks to me of belonging, of an embeddedness in the natural world. Exploring the unknown is important to me in the creative process. I love art's “happy accidents” -I like to work with the natural tendencies of the materials to see what the work itself is suggesting, being a co-creator in a way. I experiment with many different kinds of media, including 3D objects, painting, printmaking, photography, installations, light based and ephemeral works. I love the process of collaborating with other artists, I find embarking on a creative journey together to be very energising, and I love the surprising and exciting fractal outcomes. I have also participated in many community based art projects, and enjoy seeing what the creative process brings when people work together in a hands-on workshop environment. |
